- The Nourish in Nature retreat was an incredible experience. It was not only relaxing and energising, but also equipped me with so much information and lots of ideas for how to integrate food, herbs and yoga into my life to help feel more balanced. 6 months on I am regularly using the things I learned during the retreat in my daily life. Getting Here

Fly into either Lisbon or Porto and connect with a national bus to our nearest station, Pedrogao Grande. Both Lisbon and Porto are beautiful cities and guests often extend their holiday by a day or two to spend some time in the city. Please note that it does take a day to get here, including flight time, airport time and catching the bus here. The bus usually takes 3.5 hours. Please allow at least an hour to either take a bus or taxi from the airport to the national bus terminal.

Check in is any time after 5pm on the Sunday of each retreat week.

If you plan to fly into Portugal on the same day as the start of the retreat, you will need a morning flight to connect with the afternoon buses. Here is the website for the buses – www.rede-expressos.pt. Tickets can be purchased online or easily at the bus station.

The bus leaves Lisbon - Sete Rios Station at 3.45 and arrives at our local bus station, Pedrogao Grande at 7.30pm. This is not a direct bus, you will change in Coimbra.

The bus leaves Porto - Rede Expressos Terminal, near Sao Bento at 5pm, and also arrives at Pedrogao Grande at 7.30pm. This is a direct bus, but at other days and times it will not be direct and the journey will take 3.5 hours. Please refer to the bus web site for more information.

We will meet and collect guests from the bus station and bring them to Quinta Canaval. Transfers to and from the bus station are included in the retreat package.

Leaving on Saturday morning.

Usually guests leave in time to catch the 7.45am direct bus to Lisbon or 9am (change at Coimbra) buses to both Lisbon and Porto. These early morning buses allow plenty of time to connect with flights at the end of the day. Transfer to and from the bus station is included in the retreat package. Remember to allow yourself time to transfer from the bus station to the airport.

Daily Program

8am – 10am – Morning Yoga Class, warming and dynamic methods, Vinyasa and Hatha Yoga with pranayama and relaxation.

10 am – 11.30am – Breakfast, seasonal fruits, cereals, home made gluten free breads and jam, toast and a selection of teas (green, black, herbal teas) and coffee.

11.30 – 2pm - Morning workshops with Sara

2pm – Lunch – Seasonal salads from the garden, raw vegan pates and dips, one grain salad each day, spanish omelette, falafel, raw noodles with peanut sauce etc. Just a few of our tasty lunch time meals.

4pm – 6pm – Afternoon free time for workshops – treatment time with Aoife * Please note, we will send you an arrival email a week prior to the retreat which will give you a day and time for your complementary treatment.

6pm – 7pm – Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday - Afternoon Yoga

8pm – Evening meal

If for any reason you are unable to attend the retreat please contact us and we will look at refunding your deposit.

Please note – there are no ATM machines locally, you will need to bring cash with you. We sell a small selection of hand herbal balms and creams, honey when available, eye pillows and are also a walk from the village of Bravo.

Other Activities

This special week will be filled with activities and workshops for guests. Sara Rooney our medical herbalist will be offering five herb and nutrition based workshops;

- a herb walk & talk, identifying, gathering, drying and storing herbs

- using herbs for health, making blends, tinctures

- herbs for hormone health, healthy ageing

- smoothie making workshops

- adrenal fatigue and herbs to support women's busy lives

Guests also have the opportunity to book in for private consultations with Sara, or extra massage treatments with Aoife.

Guests usually spend their spare time relaxing by the pool, reading, lying in the sun, walking to the village, or to the reservoir for swimming (pictured above).

Massage and holistic therapies

All guests on Nourish in Nature receive a complementary 50 minute treatment from Aoife at the start of the week. Guests will then be able to book in with Aoife later in the week for more specialised or longer sessions. Please have a look at Aoife's information for prices and make sure you bring enough cash, or pay in advance, if you would like to book any follow up sessions with her.

Need to Know

 

Guest Information – We are really passionate about our guests getting the most out of their retreat experience. It is very important that you tell us everything relevant to your health. We will send you a Nourish in Nature healthcare form, and Aoife will also send her own healthcare form a week before the retreat. Please make sure you take a little time to fill them out and return them to us. Thank you.

 

Smokers – If you are a smoker please be aware of other guests. There is no smoking inside and we ask that you don't smoke in the communal areas. Ashtrays are provided, please do not leave cigarette butts lying around on the land.

Communal Kitchen- Please help to keep the kitchen and dining area clear of tea and coffee cups throughout the day. Thank you.

Food – We provide three tasty wholefood meals a day.  Vegan and gluten free options are available. Please tell us if you have any further dietary requirements.

Quinta Canaval is completely off-grid and sustainable. There is plenty of electricity for lights, charging phones and laptops, but we ask guests not to use hair dryers or hair straighteners, appliances which use a lot of electricity to heat up. We ask guests to be aware of turning things off and unplugging items when finished charging etc.

Guests need to be aware that Qunita Canaval is located in Central Portugal, in the area which was affected by the fires last summer. The immediate surroundings of the Quinta were unaffected, but some of the local landscape has been burnt and is a golden, sepia colour, rather than green.

Things to Bring

Sunscreen, a hat and a towel for swimming.

Please bring biodegradable shower products. We ask guests to respect resources and to not bring polluting products. We also sell natural herb soaps and herbal balms made locally.

Warm clothing, we are high up and it does cool down at night. We really recommend you bring some warm clothes for evenings and morning yoga practice and relaxation time. Covering up in the evening will also deter the insects if you are outside.

Insect repellent, we are close to the reservoir and there are mosquitos around at night, all the beds have mosquito nets, but we recommend you bring some insect repellent with you.

We have mats, blocks, straps and eye pillows here, but if if you prefer to use your own yoga mat, please bring it with you.

Please note - There are no shops nearby, anything you may need for example from a chemist, please bring it with you.

Wifi – We do have wifi which guests are able to use, we do encourage guests to take a break from technology and have a little digital detox time, as much as is possible.

A word about Safety

We want to make sure you have an enjoyable and safe yoga experience with us. It is very important that you let us know if you are suffering or recovering from any injuries or medical conditions. If you are pregnant we do not recommend attending a yoga retreat until after your first scan at 12 weeks. Equally important is to let us know if you are going through a major emotional trauma like the loss of a loved one, or a massive life change. We will be discreet with all information disclosed to us, but it is important for us to know.

We ask that you remain present and aware of your body and your limitations. Please be careful in your yoga practice and avoid injury. We also remind you to take care when out walking and swimming in the reservoir. Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun. Incorporate the quality of ahimsa, non-harming, into your practice and your life. Be gentle with yourself.
